Health and Safety Representative Initial Training Course Overview

The primary responsibility of the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is to collaborate with colleagues in identifying health and safety concerns and communicate these issues to management. HSRs are elected by their peers to articulate the collective viewpoints of the staff.

This program equips participants with the essential knowledge and skills needed to effectively perform their role as a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) in New South Wales. Training Ahead Australia, an approved provider by SafeWork NSW, delivers this course in compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act of 2011.

In New South Wales, HSRs have the right to attend a five-day training course, approved by SafeWork NSW, within three months of requesting such training from their PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking). Employers are obligated to grant HSRs the necessary time off work to attend this training. Additionally, HSRs are entitled to attend one-day refresher courses every twelve months, starting one year after the completion of the initial five-day course, in accordance with the Work Health and Safety legislation.

  • Overview of the legislative framework for Workplace Health and Safety (WHS)
  • Responsibilities of various stakeholders
  • Essential WHS terminology
  • The functions of SafeWork NSW and repercussions for non-compliance
  • Requirements and mechanisms for workplace consultation on work health and safety matters
  • The role, rights, and protections afforded to Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Health and Safety Committees (HSCs)
  • Resolving workplace health and safety concerns through negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Identification of hazards and strategies for their elimination or reduction
  • Incident notification and investigation procedures
  • The process of issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and instructing the cessation of unsafe work.

TAA requires all students to be 18 years of age or older.

When does the course expire: This course does not expire, as refreshers are optional to attend (We do offer HSR Refresher Training)

This course is not eligible for Government Subsidies through Training Ahead Australia.
