Flashbutt Welding Course

This course provides the foundational competencies required for employees and people looking to enter the industry to become rail welders.

Rail Operators (AROs) consider this skill set to be a minimum requirement for anyone wanting to work within the rail corridor as a Flashbutt rail welder. On completion of this course, it will make up the following ARTC Flashbutt Welder RIWC role.

By choosing to enroll in this accelerated course, you are indicating that you have prior experience. On enrolment, you will be required to complete a safety self-questionnaire indicating your experience, which will be reviewed by our trainer.

Duration: 5 days + on job assessment.

Delivery Method: Pre-course reading and Classroom based (face to face) training.
Assessment Type: Knowledge assessment, practical observation assessment and in field logbook with workplace observation(s).

  • TLIW0004 Grind Rails (R1)
  • TLIW0006 Heat and cut materials using oxy-LPG equipment for the rail industry (R1)
  • TLIW0008 Weld rail using flashbutt welding process (R1)

TAA Admission Requirements:

Based on industry consultation and job role expectation as per the RIW National Track and Civil Matrix, TAA has the following admission requirements:

Student must provide:

  • General/Medical Requirements:
    • Working as an offsider or welder on the network for minimum 2 months
  • Statement of Attainments (or equivalent):
    • TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor
    • CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
    • TLIB0012 Maintain and use hand tools
    • TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
    • TLIE1003 Participate in basic workplace communications
    • TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures
    • TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure
    • TLIS2044 Carry out rail installation
    • TLIS2034 Install and repair rail fastening systems

TAA requires all students to be 18 years of age or older.

When does the course expire: The units of competency do not expire however the Certificate of Achievement expire every 2 years. You can complete the recertification through Training Ahead Australia.
What to bring and wear:

The practical will be completed in a simulated rail corridor and full PPE will be required. The following standard PPE is required:

  • Safety boots – ankle support, steel cap and lace up
  • Long pants and long sleeve shirt (cotton drill or similar, not nylon)
  • Rail approved orange long sleeve high visibility shirt or high visibility vest
  • Shade 5 flip type cutting goggles (or shade 5 safety glasses with side protection)
  • Shade 5 visor will be required for people that require glasses during the welding process
  • 300mm high leather spats with fire resistant coating (when grinding)
  • P2 disposable fume particle mask (when welding)
  • Long leather welder’s gloves
  • Hard hat

Training Ahead has limited welding equipment available however students are required to provide their own equipment unless previously arranged with Training Ahead.

We prefer to teach students to use their own equipment.

No Guarantee

Training Ahead does not provide any guarantee that:

  • A student will successfully complete a training product on its scope of registration; or
  • A student will obtain a particular employment outcome where this is outside the control of the RTO.
Work Placement

Students will be required to complete an infield logbook undertaking the role under guided supervision of a competent and qualified mentor as per the logbook requirements.

Students will not be issued a Qualification Testamur or Statement of Attainment without a valid USI.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
  • Students are required to have the ability to read and write English
  • The ASQF level of this training program has been assessed to be level 2.
  • Students are required to have at least Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills. Please advise if you have any language, literacy, or numeracy needs; or difficulties reading, writing, or speaking English.

All individuals entering into this training course are subject to an LLN assessment prior to enrolment. If the LLN assessment does not adequately assess the candidates LLN level or there is any ambiguity, the assessor will conduct a secondary interview to determine the candidates LLN level and take appropriate action, in accordance with TAA’s LLN procedures.

Where a candidate is determined to not meet the required LLN skills required they will not be enrolled in the training program.

Government Funded Training

This course is not eligible for Government Subsidies through Training Ahead Australia.
