Training Ahead is an approved supplier of ARTC and offers the ARTC approved training of the ARTC TA20 Lookout and Handsginaller Course.

This course is intended for people who want a career in transport and logistics performing Lookout and Handsignaller tasks on the ARTC Victorian network.

There are two methods of delivery for the course:

Option 1

Public Courses: 4 Day Course

This will involve 4 days of classroom learning with Training Ahead Australia


Option 2:

For selected approved companies, the following delivery method may be chosen

  • 2 days classroom based training then;
  • 2 days on site practical training

Once the 4 days of initial training is completed a logbook will be issued and will be required to be completed within 6 months of issuing.

Entry Requirements:

Training.gov as has no pre-requisites listed however as per ARTC Network have the following requirements:

  • Rail Industry Workers Card
  • Category 1 Rail Medical
  • TLIF2080 – Safely Access the Rail Corridor
  • CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry
Units of Competency:

  • TLIF2081 – Perform Lookout Duties
  • TLIF2082 – Perform Handsignaller Duties
  • TLIW2001 – Operate Under Track Protection Rules
  • TLIF2097 – Use Audible Track Warning Devices
Assessment Type:Theory Assessment, Practical Assessment and Logbook

What to Bring and Wear:

Please bring on day 1

  • Rail Industry Workers Card
  • Photo ID – Preferably Drivers Licence or Passport

Please wear full PPE each day of training including:

  • Work Boots,
  • Long pants,
  • Long Sleeve High Visibility Shirt or High Visibility Vest
  • Eye Protection – safety glasses
  • A Hard Hat
  • Safety Gloves
  • If you are unable to bring the above, please contact the TAA office to arrange to hire some in advance.
